Croissants etc

Eurostar is highly over-rated. It is quick, but other than that, nothing extraordinary about the 2hr 15 min trip to Paris from London of which the Chunnel portion was about 25 minutes. At St Pancras station in London, there isn’t even enough space between the security check and the immigration counters, some equipment creates a large bottleneck there. The seats in the train are very uncomfortable, exactly like the seats in London cinemas, which for some inexplicable reason, have an odd angle back just behind your head, which makes it impossible to lean back without tilting your head at an odd and uncomfortable angle.

I think the highlights of Paris were (in no particular order):

Walking around in the gardens of Versailles – the palace has 700 rooms and zero bathrooms.

Being the first into the Louvre and getting an audience with the Mona Lisa before any one else got there. What makes a painting more famous than another anyway?

Hot croissants and coffee at a quiet patisserie every morning

The Eiffel Tower at night, with a glittering light show

Van Gogh and Cezanne’s work at the Musée d’Orsay

Dinner at a bistro on the Champs-Élysées
