Morro is on Ilha Tinhare, about 65 km south of Salvador. Getting there from Porto Alegre takes a long time.
We took a taxi at 5:30 am for the 7 am flight that stopped over at Rio. The nice part about the flight was that it stopped at Santos Dumont airport from where we caught a good view of both Pao de Acucar and Christo Redentor. We flew Azul which turned out to be a very good airline in terms of service.
From Salvador we took a small plane to Morro which was a 20 minute flight that offered a great view of Salvador and the All Saints Bay. A hotel rep met us at the landing strip and took us to the hotel on an old decrepit Volkswagen van. The hotel was located on Praia do Encanto or the 5th beach. Morro has major 5 beaches, the first 3 of which are more “happening”.
The food and service in the hotel were great, as was the setting which was bungalows inside a tropical rainforest environment with the front facing the beach. The beach itself wasn’t that great for swimming since there was a coral reef some distance from the shore where most of the waves broke. It was good for observing marine life in the natural pools that formed because of the reef.
The hotel provided transportation to and from the Village where the first three beaches were located. The atmosphere at the small bars along these was really nice, quite like Goa, with good music and people of all ages enjoying themselves in the sea. Food in Morro was awesome, with things being really spicy compared to the drab fare dished out in the South. Bobo de Camarrao was my favourite, a spicy prawn gravy. Morro turned out to be a really good place for a vacation, we were just sad that we had only 2 days there.
